William Alfred Schoeberlein, Jr.

November 19, 1922 ~ October 21, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Schoeberlein, William A. Jr.

On October 21, 2016, William Alfred Schoeberlein, Jr., beloved husband of the late Jane H. Schoeberlein (nee Sokolowska), his wife of 67 years; devoted father of Patricia J. McNutt, William A. Schoeberlein III and his wife Cecelia, and Robert W. Schoeberlein and his wife Johanna Som de Cerff; dear grandfather of Kathryn, William IV and his wife Shuko, and Stephanie Schoeberlein, and Kathleen and Kelley McNutt. He also leaves behind three siblings, John Schoeberlein, Anna Seitl, and Mary Wheeler, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Eleanor Jacobs.

Bill was born and raised in the Baltimore neighborhood of Canton. As a youth, he worked at a Boston Street packing house. Also a gifted young athlete, he spent many hours playing baseball and soccer at Patterson Park, garnering numerous medals from the Playground Athletic League. He was a 3-letter man at Loyola High School where he received a baseball scholarship. He attended Loyola College and the US Naval Academy. As a plebe, he played on the undefeated 1943 varsity soccer team that became the National champions. Bill went on to flight training in the Midwest, where he played baseball for the Iowa Seahawks. Immediately after WWII, he played semi-pro ball for the Albany Baseball Club of the Eastern League. An arm injury cut short his sports career. Back in Baltimore, he met Jane (Jennie), the love of his life, a daughter of Polish immigrants living in Fell’s Point. They married in 1947. Bill then worked for Fisher Body, a division of General Motors. After receiving training at the General Motors Institute, he became the factory representative for North and South Carolina in the early 1950s. In 1953, he accepted a sales position at Baltimore’s new Swartz Cadillac Company (now Frankel Cadillac), where he later spent decades as sales manager. Bill won many sales contest prizes, including trips with his wife to Spain, Monaco, France, Switzerland, and England. After retiring in 1983, he traveled extensively in the US with his son William and his family. For over fifty years, he was part of a monthly card club. He was very fond of singing barbershop quartet music. More recently, he enjoyed watching television, especially Orioles games, doing word puzzles and Suduko, and eating steamed shrimp and crab cakes. Bill was a handsome, generous, and kind man who loved entertaining people and making them happy. Even through his end-of-life challenges, a smile often came to his lips.
