A flower, Dr. S.S. Raja, dearer in the eyes of Jesus Christ was plucked to decorate His heavenly kingdom on Tuesday, August 06,2024.
Dr. S.S. Raja was born as fourth child to Late Mr. Mathews and Late Dr. Emmabai in Kattumanar Koil in Tamil Nadu, India in 1956. After having his schooling there, he went to the prestigious Madras Christian College, Tambaram, India to do his undergrad, postgrad and his Master of Philosophy in History (1976-1981). He was a proud resident of Bishop Heber Hall. He became an adult education school organizer, a unit of Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sattur down south. When an opportunity was given, he joined as lecturer in the Department of History in Tranquebar Bishop Manikam Lutheran College in Poraiyar. He served there for 19 years teaching history to the UG, PG and research scholars. His area of interest is Asian Studies. In 1996, he obtained his doctoral degree from Bharathidasan University, Thiruchirapalli on the Health care facilities provided by TELC church.
During these periods, he had done a marvellous evangelical work in an around the area of Tranquebar and Karaikal. He served as pastoral committee member in the combined Tranquebar and Karikal Pastorate. He was actively engaged in choir in the historic New Jerusalem Church, Tranquebar. His most exemplary evangelical work as catechist in the villages around these areas, especially in Melakottuchery, Chandrabady. He is still remembered as the catechist with violin.
God elevated him to serve as the President of TBML College from 1999- 02. He carried out his important task with utmost honesty and sincerity. He undertook important reformation in terms of administration, from discipline to the welfare of the staff and students. He was very much respected in the college.
During these times, when prosperous job options opened for his spouse in US, they decided to set the journey across the seas. In Baltimore, Maryland US, he worked as night auditor in ‘El-Rich Motel’ for nine years from 1998-2000. Later he owned Jeevan’s Indian Groceries. From 2006-09 he served as a Church council member and property committee member in Prince of Peace Lutheran church. Owing to his interest in the praise and worship, he became the coordinator of Indian/Tamil – multicultural worship in the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church from 2015 till his passing away. Along with that he did local ministries in several churches & homes playing music instruments and sharing the love of Christ.
He left behind his loving wife Nahomi, dearest son Jeeva and wonderful daughter – in – law Grace, and score of his loved ones both in India and Us.
A hardcore Lutheran, he lived a perfect Christian life. He always thrived to lead an honest, simple life exemplifying Jesus in his words and deeds.
