On July 6, 2023, Jay Joseph Popowicz passed away at Bayview Medical Center surrounded by members of his church as they prayed over him. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph James Popowicz and Doris Ann Popowicz (née: Zaicko) and is survived by his sisters Janis Handte and Judith Brunton.
Born in Rosedale, Maryland on March 13, 1952, Jay loved his hometown and was an avid fan of the Orioles. He received a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins in 1976 and worked his way through night school to earn a Master of Liberal Arts from the same in 1982. Jay was a passionate bibliophile and read widely in history and politics, while also maintaining a devotion to classic films.
Jay had recommitted himself to Christ and was a founding member of Freedom Church, Hazelwood Ave. There he was an integral part of a rich community and will be remembered for his generous work in establishing this spiritual home for so many.
Visitation will take place at Cvach/Rosedale Funeral Home for the public from 6-8pm on Thursday, July 13th. Funeral services will be held at Cvach/Rosedale on Friday, July 14th at 11am. Burial rites will take place afterwards at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
